I grew up with the Organ - Dad was a concert musician for Hammond Co. & played also for Calif. Angels stadium. Began as church worship leader at 12, studied polkas & classical at the Green Duck Restaurant outside Chicago. Profs - Dr. Francis Moore, Emma Lou O'Brien (Santa Barbara), Roger Nyquist, Al Campbell (both UCSB), David Johnson (Ariz. State). Bach, Vierne & Widor (all who taught me to dance with the instrument), Alain, Langlais and lots of German moderns, who taught me freedom from bar lines. Played in several denominations; asked by Catholics to help with Renewal in 60's. Major commitment to Christ in 1973 - I've been a worship director & pastor with the Assemblies of God since then. Have composed 20 full-length music dramas, including 'Abraham', "Isaiah', 'The Cruise' (Ecclesiastes, set aboard an ocean liner), and others. Held the first Rainier Bach Festival (probably the only time a major bach prelude & fugue had been played in Rainier's history - lotta country folk here). A bit lonely for an instrument - several years ago I received a D-152 (full pedal board) and got to play for the raccoons and blue jays; but being in an open garage during some 9-degree days did the tubes in; so it's the Well-Tempered at the piano for awhile. And I'm in the Northwest Jazz Orchedstra as a pianist. // My wife is an operatic soprano, kids are very artistic, and we just had our first granchild! I'm presently out of a job, which is why I have time to fill out Profiles like this. We've gotten very capable with Contemporary music, but the paths diverged too much. For my whole life I've kept the Bach-fires burning, walking in a land where few understand its beauties. Perhaps the future will bring about a blending of the paths. |
